Alcoholism is alive – a mysterious, soul-destroying and murderous entity. I refer to it as The Stranger.
I recorded the following stanza to help others understand what it is like being held by The Stranger.
Not a damn thing. Well, that was my initial thought.
I first heard of Demi Lovato’s relapse and hospitalization last week through a friend of mine, Kurt. We were having one of our routine conversations and the topic just wove its way into it as contemporary, newsworthy issues have a way of doing.
I knew little of Demi Lovato as a popstar, entertainer, or her personal life prior to my conversation with Kurt. Walking back to my car, I decided I would find out a little bit about her. What intrigued me was the fact she was a self-confessed addict, in addition to alcoholism.
Our response to fear is ancient and prehistoric, buried deeply within our limbic system. Once it materializes in full, it’s beyond our conscious ability to control.
Fear is also the basis for the “Fight, Flight, or Freeze” response most vertebrates on our planet have the pleasure to experience.
With the Fourth upon us, I spent a moment reflecting upon what the most memorable Fourth of July’s have been in my life.
It was easier than I thought. Once I inserted the word memorable in my screening criteria, only a few remained.

I suffered two massive hemorrhages, causing fatal bleeding and a trip via helicopter to a hospital’s Shock-Trauma center.
Miraculously I’m alive. In the aftermath of this horrific medical trauma and near-death experience, I need to talk with you about the Stigma of alcoholism.
Amidst our advanced understanding and knowledge of human physiology, there is little agreement on what alcoholism us.
How has this vicious, fatal and prevalent affliction escaped our definition for so long?
Let’s take a moment and reflect back upon all the cheer St. Patrick’s Day has brought us each over the years! It’s truly an enchanted day, leprechauns, lucky charms, shamrocks, green apparel, pots of gold, rainbows, and gallons of green beer.
It’s quite a day!
As we mature, everybody has to get used to the fact that shit happens. Period. Life is messy. Life’s not fair. For everybody.
